Transfer or stop the electricity supply

Typical deadline: 30 days after the death

The electricity account must either be transferred to a new name or stopped — otherwise charges keep running in the deceased's name. The change is made with the provider (PPC/DEI or another) using the death certificate.

Steps

  1. Find the supply number on a recent bill.
  2. Contact the provider and request a name change or disconnection.
  3. You'll need the death certificate, the new holder's tax number and a recent meter reading.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to change the name on the electricity account?

Usually: the death certificate, the supply number (from a recent bill), the new holder's tax number (AFM), and a recent meter reading. Each provider has its own form — call first to ask.

Do the old bills have to be paid off?

The deceased's electricity debts are, in principle, a debt of the estate. Ask the provider for a final statement so you know the exact amount before transferring or stopping the supply.
